To a kayaker, there's just something therapeutic about watching a dam blow up. We dream about it, we joke about it, but we don't really ever expect it to happen. Fortunately, it did happen this year in the Pacific Northwest and we'll soon see miles of new whitewater and restored salmon runs because of it. The story stuck a chord this weekend at the National Paddling Film Festival, where Craziest Idea won 'Best Professional Documentary' and 'Best of Show.'
The Year of the River series was made possible by the generosity of American Whitewater, American Rivers, Dagger, NRS and the Hydropower Reform Coalition.
You can watch the full 7-minute cut of the film online (below). Or, if you're short on time, you should definitely check out the 2-minute clip of the dam being blown up. With the rate of dam removal higher than the rate of dam construction, I'm happy to think that this certainly won't be the last time we're celebrating.
