Top Ten Best Self Support Meals
1. Fresh Fish: Preparation includes: Tin foil, fishing line and a hook. Cooking Instructions: Catch the fish by whipping the fishing line and hook over your head and throwing it into the water. This may take a couple of hours. After the fish is caught wrap it in tinfoil and cook it around the fire. Pass it around the fire and share with friends. Warning: Be sure fish is fully cooked. If you attempt to cook on a rock make sure you choose a rock that wont explode when it gets hot.
2. Burritos: This is easy, for best results: Order a burrito at your local taqueria wrap it in plastic and put it in your dry bag. Cooking: Unwrap it and let the savory Mexican flavor melt in you mouth (not so great if you have a long hike ahead its a bit heavy)
3. Chedderworst: There cheap, there are easy to cook and they are delicious. Preparation: Some small ketchup and mustard packets, roasting stick and cheddar worst. Cooking instructions: Unwrap chedderworst and roast over the fire until the cheddar inside starts oozing out and the weener is slightly burned. Eat it off the stick squeezing ketchup and mustard on each bite. If you want to get fancy cook up some easy mac and cut up the chedderworst and drop it in. Great for breakfast lunch and dinner.
4. Chicken Tikka Masala or Pollock Paneer: Why not spice up the expedition with Indian Food. This is an Indian dish that packs up small and is relatively light if you bring your own dried rice. You can buy Indian dishes packaged in aluminum at Trader Joes and then buy some rice. Cooking Instructions: Cook rice in pot over fire, after rice is cooked pour contents of the Indian goodness over the rice stir and eat.
5. The good old mountain house which is the lightest meal for the most calories. I prefer beef stroganoff or lasagna and for dessert hands down the raspberry crumble is the bomb. (Raspberry crumble is great dry as well no need to mix with hot water) Mountain houses are generally easy to cook put in a couple cups of boiling water and let sit for ten minutes. Be patient with these they are much better when fully cooked. Words from experience: In the event your buddy swims for example on Fantasy Falls and looses the pot, fill the mountain house up with river water, heat up some rocks around the fire and try to cook on the hot rocks. Be sure not to the get mountain house to close to the fire because the bag will melt. If cooking a mountain house this way be pre warned that your rice or noodles will still be crunchy but food will be hot.
6. Instant Mashies with gravy: Certainly hits the spot after a hard day of paddling and easy preparation also great if you need to pack light. Simply buy a bag of instants and a packet of gravy and add hot water
7. Salami and cheese on a bagel are great for lunches you get your protein and carbs and you don’t have to heat anything up!
8. Annie’s Mac and Cheese with frozen veggies. Preparation a Ziploc bag of frozen vegetables, a box of Annie’s Mac and cheese, a packet of soy sauce. Cook up the mack and cheese with the frozen vegetables Mix in a packet of soy sauce and enjoy.
9. Top Ramen Thai Specialty: Preparation: Two packets of chicken top ramen and Ziploc of peanut butter Cook up the top ramen noodles and add flavor packet. Strain out all water and add one or two large scoops of peanut butter. Mix well. The noodles will appear a bit creamy. The peanut butter adds calories, protein and a delicious Thai flavor to the noodles. I even cook this one at home. And lets face it doesn’t get much more budget than this.(crunchy peanut butter is best)
10. Katie’s Camping Delight: preparation: Oatmeal, peanut butter, almonds and dried fruit. Breakfasts are my least favorite meals of self-supports. Simply because I hate oatmeal yet it is the lightest and most efficient breakfast you can bring. So I found a new way for me to stomach down the oatmeal. I prefer to use plain oatmeal. I mix it with loads of peanut butter and almonds and dried blueberries and mango.
Other Delicious Snacks include:
Wasabi Almonds, Sub Cuch (an Indian trail mix) jerky, tuna packets and crackers, snickers and red vines.
