The Soouth Feather is a short but steep creek that flows for an entire month every fall due to the lowering of Little Grass Valley Reservoir. Having raced this section of river last year during Gnarlfest 2011 it was blatantly obvious that this course was not for longboats. This year things were gonna change as Will Pruett and myself took a visit to the river 5 days before the race with only Greenboats loaded on the car. The crux of the course is a 25 footer with a shallow landing that had been speculated by many not to "GO" in a longboat such as the Greenboat! Will and I probed hard for the community and found the opposite of what people believed would happen. The Greenboats speed and length were the key to the puzzle on this drop as we were sending through the lip and sailing away from the veil with so much air underneath!
This culminated in Gnarlfest 2012 becoming another extreme long boat race for our community. So stoked on the progression as 2/3 of the field at the race were Charging Green Boats! Next years Gnarlfest will include a ramp start into an additional rapid at the beginning of the course- only making this awesome race a bit more GNARLY!!!!
