Its been almost two months since my California summer ended and I returned home to the Southeast. With little rain here and little rain in sight, I often find myself daydreaming about California and just how awesome it is. That got me thinking, what exactly is it about California that makes it so great?
Here are the top ten reasons why I think California is one of the best places in the world to go… Continue

Ok, so you just bought a kayak, but now you’re wondering how you’re going to get it home on your car. Or maybe you’ve figured out how to carry one boat, but now you’re headed to the river with four of your friends and you have to carry their boats too. The process of loading boats onto a vehicle can be a bit over whelming at times, especially the first time you try to carry a load you’re not used to. For those people that fall into this category, I have laid out the best and most common ways to… Continue

Last week I was fortunate enough to take a trip into the granite planet on Upper Cherry Creek. Due to a work commitment and coordinating a plan for Gareth's dog, we had to wait a couple days to put on, which led to the water being lower than preferred. As it turns out though, Upper Cherry with any water in it is a spectacular place not to be missed.…

The past two weeks have been epic out here in the high sierra country of California. With the huge snowpack and cold weather of the spring, it was seeming like the multi-day season would never come, but alas, it finally did and man has it been sweet.
We kicked off the season with a trip into the Royal Gorge of the North Fork of the… Continue

Last week we ran Dinkey Creek. During the summer, this might not have been such an epic adventure. But in the spring, when the roads are locked in by snow and the rivers are on the rise, running Dinkey…

A broken hand cause by a fall while scouting on the Rio de Cajones kept me from getting to kayak as much as I wanted to on my recent trip down to Mexico. Before the accident however, I did get on an awesome creek on the Eastern coast that is a must do for anyone taking a trip south.
The Rio do Oro is located on the Costa de Oro in a tiny town called Arroyo de Lisa. Gareth and I drove five hours from Tylapacoyon with essentially no beta about the run besides that we should do it. The… Continue

Last week I checked off a new Southeastern classic from my to-do list. I had been wanting to do the Toxaway for a while, but was waiting until the right day to do it. I'd say that a late October day with sunny, 70 degree weather during peak leaf season could not have met my requirements for a perfect day any better. The level was -4" (medium-low) and the team solid.
The Toxaway fullfilled every expectation I had for it and more. Slide after slide after sweet slide we moved our way… Continue

Last weekend I decided to take a long overdue trip down to Florida to visit my family. Like clockwork, as soon as I left for Florida is started to rain in Western North Carolina. I swear that it rains every time I leave time. And it didn't just rain, it poured.
As soon as my plane landed back in the Southeast Monday afternoon I was making phone calls to see if I could find anyone who wasn't already… Continue

I have officially been back from Cali for three weeks now and while I missed out on some of the big runs (mainly Upper Cherry and Middle Kings) that I wanted to get, I still had an amazing month of boating out there and am already planning my trip back in 2010. Just wanted to post up some pictures of the highlights of my trip.
The stopover in Vegas on our way to California
Dinkey Creek Waterfalls… Continue

After three full days of driving from North Carolina and one quick run down Oh Be Joyful, I finally arrived at the takeout of my first California river- Dinkey Creek. I had heard so many great things about this epic run that there was no way I could pass it up (even though I would have preferred a bit more warm up). This was also my first experience paddling a loaded boat and I was surprised at just how well the Nomad handled the weight. It… Continue

When most people arrive in France they probably learn how to say important French phrases like "Où sont les toilettes s'il vous plaît?" (Where are the toilets please?) and "J'ai besoin d'un taxi" (I need a taxi). My first French words were “Giclée a gauche” and “Giclée a droite,” which mean "boof left" and "boof right." These two phrases became my lifeline throughout the two weeks I spent kayaking on the French island of Corsica with a group of French… Continue
