Strong Shoulders!

It's that time of year when the snow starts melting and the rivers start running and that means you need to be getting in shape for an epic paddling season.

As we all know, strong shoulders are key to a successful paddling season! There are a few simple movements you can be doing now to get your shoulders in peak shape for paddling this year.

1. The hand stand push up is a great movement that can be done at home or in the gym. There are several variations of…

First Descents is looking for participants and guides

For those of you who don't know what First Descents is, we're an organization that provides free outdoor adventure programs to young adults (18-39) with cancer. Our adventures are all over the country and world, primarily in the summer and include surfing, kayaking and climbing.

We're always looking for interested participants. Thus, if you know anyone between 18 and 39 who has or has had cancer, please send them to www.firstdescents.org to…

Freezing

it's that time of year when water turns to snow and the skis come out. I was filming a tv show in Valdez, AK this summer with Dean Cummings who is one my childhood heroes. Dean was in all the major kayak films back in the day and his voice, like Warren Miller's, brings back countless memories. This summer, while kayaking on the Tsaina river near Valdez, I had a chance to hear all about Dean's life and my sense of hero only grew. Here's a great blog post on Outside's blog about Dean. Be sure…

First Descents' featured on PBS

A cool feature on www.firstdescents.org (a non profit that Dagger supports) on PBS. It's also an awesome tribute to Nick "Nickname" Raitt. Good friend, good boater, good guy.

Summer Training! It's Gonna Be A Big One!

If you're anything like me, texting and driving is safe compared to driving along a river in the spring time! This year is especially bad if you live in the Northern Rockies, California or the Northwest. After a MASSIVE snow year, all signs are pointing to an equally epic run off. It's time to get ready for spring, paddling and all things awesome!

Here are a few key pointers to get ready for big water.

1. MOBILITY IS KEY! Avoiding injuries is better than rehabbing and…

Your next challenge

This one is simple. With kayak season right around the corner, I need you all to start challenging yourselves to get ready for an epic season of run off.

Here it is: If you know a young adult 18-39 with cancer (they can have it, have had it, be in treatment or anything in between) your challenge is to tell them about the free adventures that First Descents offers. This is a chance for you to share your love of kayaking with someone who could really stand to benefit from it!…

What have you done to challenge yourself lately?

It's a question that most of us kayakers ask ourselves all too often. It's what draws us to the sport. Through challenge we grow, learn and find presence.

What many of us don't realize is that challenge can be more than just a life refresher. It can be medicine...therapy. At least that's the feedback we've had at First Descents. Through legitimate outdoor challenges, our participants defy cancer, understand it,…

Training

For some of us, paddling continues year round. For others though, the water freezes and the powder begins. For us powder hounds we need to find ways to stay in shape for the approaching spring run off. There are a few key things we can be doing to hit the water stronger than ever.

1. Keep your shoulders strong. Practice hand stand push ups, overhead squats and shoulder presses.

2. Maintain core strength by doing pull ups, push ups and pull overs. If you don't know what a pull… Continue

Pick a Challenge!

As the water begins to dry up and the first signs of fall are in the air, our whitewater challenges often dwindle and we're left "sans adrenaline" until next year. Now is the time to pick you "off-season" challenge and get to work. Most importantly, do this for a good cause. It's always even more rewarding to finish these challenges if we can do them for something bigger than ourselves.

As an example, I hate running so I've decided to challenge myself with running the NYC Marathon this… Continue

Eating right?

Ok, ok, I know that kayakers are hungry people and we usually shop by quantity and price but here are a few things to think about if you can when selecting your next meal. Remember, diet is one of the biggest pieces to training and, if done correctly, can help you find a whole new gear when paddling!

Eat a lot of lean protein. If you're active and paddling a lot, you should be consuming about 1 gram of protein per pound (of your weight) per day. Thus, I try to consume about…

Season's here, you ready?

If you haven't been doing your offseason training, you have some catching up to do! The water is melting and nothing is worse than an early season injury because you weren't prepared. Here are a few quick things you can do to get ready asap!

Handstand push ups
Pull ups
Push ups
Overhead squats

In the past we have focused more on working the entire body which is super important but since the season's upon us, it's…

Spring is in the air!

Hey All!
I hope this post finds you well and enjoying some fresh snow melt. Nothing beats cold water and warm air! (well, nothing except warm water and warm air...:)

Just a quick update from things in my life.

1. First Descents just finished hosting it's first program in Moab, UT. It was a week of climbing and challenge for 15 young adult cancer survivors and fighters that proved to be truly…

Staying Strong this Winter

Well, it's that time of year again. My kayak is already collecting dust after being in hibernation for only a couple of months. Temperatures are below zero and the snow is falling but this doesn't mean that we can't be training for the day the snow starts to melt. Here are a few simple suggestions to stay in shape this holiday season.

1. GET OUTSIDE! Depending on where you live this can be tough. The best thing I can suggest is to learn a new winter sport. Some suggestions include… Continue

Workin' it out in the off-season!

Well folks, for the most part kayak season is coming to an end and for most of you burly kayakers, that means a lot of long lonely nights, bottles of whiskey, Sandra Bullock chic flicks with your kayak next to you and a box of kleenex. Yes, it's a sad time. Lets look at the bright side, this down time is a great opportunity to continue your off water training and start preparing for next year.

In short, I need you guys to start balancing your body. We have done a lot of upper body… Continue
