Freestyle Kayaking: How to Lunar Orbit

The Lunar Orbit is another of my favourite moves. It looks quite complicated but actually it's much more simple than you might think.

It's just a Stern Squirt into the bow end of a cartwheel. You start it from a front surf/ blast in a hole. You can even practice the motion of stern squirting into cartwheels on flatwater to get a feel for the move before trying it in a hole.…

Jitsu's first win at the Drau Rodeo in Lienz, Austria

Lienz is a beautiful mountain town in the Dolomites popular for cyclists, hikers, climbers & kayakers. It's also been the site of numerous European competitions, this year they were holding a smaller event but it would still attract quite a few international paddlers coming to…

Freestyle Kayaking: How to Mc'Nasty

This month i’m going to teach you how to do the McNasty.

It’s a great move, you can start it from many different positions and setups, it’s quick to do, impressive to see and is one of the highest scoring moves.

The technique I’m going to show you here is the most commonly used one and is the one I use nearly…

Kicking off the Whitewater Grand Prix

Being asked to compete in the Whitewater Grand Prix this year was an incredible privilege. I figured out that I had been invited just a few weeks before the event, but I was set on making it happen. I had to finish my classes two weeks early, figure a way around work responsibilities and raise enough money to finance the trip. It was a lot of work, but now that I'm here in Chile things could not be any…

White Salmon River Freedom: Celebrating a River with Community

How do Yakama Tribal members, kayakers, fish biologists, private and commercial rafters, local land owners, and a region of river conservationists come together to celebrate a newly free-flowing river?

The White Salmon River Homecoming Celebration did just that.  The day brought together stakeholders and interest groups with broad range of concerns and interests in the watershed, now that 125 ft Condit Dam is completely gone and the White Salmon River is flowing…

What's Your Angle?

Do you have trouble ferrying or feel that you get pushed off-line a lot?  If so try paying more attention to the angle you're setting with your kayak before you make your move.  Setting the correct angle can mean the difference between a ferry that feels hard and sloppy and a ferry that feels easy and precise.  It can…

Video: Huge Dam Removals and the Most Inspiring Year of My Life

On October 26, 2011, crews packed more than 700 pounds of dynamite into the base of Condit Dam on the White Salmon River in southwest Washington. Once detonated, the White Salmon River erupted through the hole, draining the reservoir behind the dam in less than an hour. One month…

Rio Pacuare a Costa Rican gem

It's been a solid 10 days of kayaking here in Cosa Rica the land of sunshine and amazing rivers.  While there are numerous opportunities to paddle all over the country my favorite run so far has been the Rio Pacuare.  The Pacuare has  a long history of kayaking and rafting in Costa Rica with some of the first companies setting up operations in the early 80's.  After spending several days running all the sections I can see why.  First off the Pacuare has an amazing amount of whitewater that…

Wintertime!

Although it really doesn't feel like it most days here in the southeast we've officially reached Winter.  Winter brings a lot of good things but it can often be a hard time to motivate to go kayaking.  After all snow, sleet, winter mix, or rain when its 35 degrees don't really scream "let's go get wet".  However if I can get past that some of the best days I've had on the river have been in the Winter.  For me it really brings a different feel, it's often super quite and less crowded.  Often…

The Green Race and Short Term Memory

Green Race!  My most anticipated race is right around the corner, first racer at high noon this Saturday.  The runs are in, the attainments done, the smack is being laid down, bets made, the list of what surrounds this race goes on and on. This year is a special one for me as its my first one back on my road to recovering from a herniated disc.  It's been super fun to be a part of everything again and I can't wait to fire out of that start gate.  But that's Saturday and this is…

VIDEO: Huge Dam Removal Means New Whitewater on the White Salmon

In 2 weeks, Condit Dam on the White Salmon River in Washington will be packed with enough explosives to blow a huge hole in the base of the concrete wall.  Moments after the climactic explosion, 10,000 CFS will gush from the tunnel and drain Northwestern Lake completely in 6 hours.  That’s the moment paddlers have been…

The best whitewater in Oregon?

Oregon is known for its huge, runnable waterfalls.  Most of the world records for highest waterfall have been set in Oregon.  However, Oregon is not known for great class five whitewater (Little White Salmon is in Washington for those not encompassed in PNW geography).

My buddy Matt King recently moved towards Eastern Oregon and away from the whitewater scene, or so we thought...  He dedicated many days to driving around and scouting out the Wallowa Mountain range.  The…

World's Biggest Dam Removal Begins This Week (Updated)

The world's largest dam removal project began yesterday on Washington's Elwha River.  The removal two dams--210 foot tall Glines Canyon Dam and 108 foot tall Elwha Dam--will restore whitewater and salmon spawning habitat that's been cut off for 100 years.  The project will take about 3 years to complete and, once…

Big Air Bonanza: Local Throwdown Old-School Style

Big air is king in rodeo.

For playboats, this might mean getting several feet out of the water.  However, stabbing the nose of a long boat into a strong hole can produce significantly bigger results.

The Big Air…

Eddy Catching 101: let the eddy work for you

Hey all hope everyone's summer has been good.  It's been a fun one here in the southeast a little on the hot side I suppose but that's just a great excuse to get in the water!  I'm going to take a moment to talk about catching eddies, actually what I really want to talk about is making it easy.  No more almost making it but sliding out the back or struggling to cross the eddy line.  Eddies can turn from your nemesis into your friend by following one easy concept:  Let the eddy do the work!…
