My Top 3 Favorite Creeks in the South East

The South East has long been known as a powerhouse in creekboating. I have sculpted my skills on the many amazing creeks within the S.E. watersheds but three stick out to me as being the best our area has to offer. The Bear on Lookout Mountain in Georgia, The Raven Fork in the Cherokee National Forest, and The Toxaway in The…

What is freedom? Using kayaking as a catalyst to find the Truth!

This one is a gem from back in 2009 - "Shoot Me In The Face With A 9mm" - photo by Ryan Allen - A lapse in time while searching for the Truth via a 20 footer into a cave!

All of us have found the gift of paddling through different avenues. Some of us were shown the light by our parents while…

First Greenboat descents of the South Feather- Gnarlfest 2012!

The Soouth Feather is a short but steep creek that flows for an entire month every fall due to the lowering of Little Grass Valley Reservoir. Having raced this section of river last year  during Gnarlfest 2011 it was blatantly obvious that this course was not for longboats. This year things were gonna change as Will Pruett and myself took a visit to the river 5 days before the race with only Greenboats loaded on the car. The crux of the course is a 25 footer with a shallow landing that had…

Stoked on the Fire!!! Let it Burn!

If I have seen farther it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.(Isaac Newton)

Over the year's I have grown into running big waterfalls and approaching the mental space needed to huck these giants.  Through the incredible collective conscience of our community of kayakers, the up and comer has more beta and confidence than ever to push the evolution of our sport. Waterfalls have been an amazing adventure and I am blessed to share in the growth!!!

Charge Hard-Charge…

An October in Nepal

This past October, as hard as it was to leave the southeast in the fall (one of my favorite places at my favorite time) I decided to take a journey about as far away as possible. The trip was to Nepal and I was excited to see a totally new culture and new rivers with the backdrop of the world's highest mountains.

Last weekend marked the annual Demo Days Festival at the Nantahala Outdoor Center.  In addition to a weekend full of boat demos the event also hosts the NOC Freestyle Shootout and the Dagger Dash Attainment Race competitions.  This years events saw high water due to heavy rains on Friday night which led to some tricky competition environments but allowed everyone to slip away in the mornings and evenings for some great runs on the Cascades.  All in all it was a great weekend as the sun…

Paddling Longevity... extending your whitewater shelf life.

Greetings all!

So before I start this little novella, I'm going to have to knock on some proverbial wood. I like to share my thoughts on these matters based on my experience, but whitewater is an inherently dangerous medium, and I hope I don't jinx myself by putting forward some guidelines to maximize your time on the water, and minimize your time in the hospital/on the injured list. I have learned a couple of things over the years though. The following are some tips that I tried to… Continue
