Why I Love To Race Kayaks!

“Flow” is a state of mind – achieved when athletes feel completely engaged in their performance, lose their perception of time, concentrate on the moment (without distraction or dilution), and, perform at extremely high levels.

Essentially, these are the moments in sport that we as athletes, coaches, and…

Solo Boating: Cataract Canyon of the Colorado

I have had a thing for Canyonlands ever since I was a kid. I grew up in Salt Lake City and would take frequent trips to explore the deserts of Southern Utah with my family. I have great memories…

An October in Nepal

This past October, as hard as it was to leave the southeast in the fall (one of my favorite places at my favorite time) I decided to take a journey about as far away as possible. The trip was to Nepal and I was excited to see a totally new culture and new rivers with the backdrop of the world's highest mountains.

Green Boat Groover

Your first time floating through the Grand Canyon can never be beat. Until, perhaps, you go again, shedding the comfort and ease of rafts and stuffing your home for 13 days into a kayak.

The first question I get asked...how do you fit a groover in a kayak?

The Green Race and Short Term Memory

Green Race!  My most anticipated race is right around the corner, first racer at high noon this Saturday.  The runs are in, the attainments done, the smack is being laid down, bets made, the list of what surrounds this race goes on and on. This year is a special one for me as its my first one back on my road to recovering from a herniated disc.  It's been super fun to be a part of everything again and I can't wait to fire out of that start gate.  But that's Saturday and this is…

Black River Festival & Whitewater King of New York

Greetings Daggerians!

I'm just checking in from Canada, where levels are sick and the weather is beautiful.

I went down to the Black River in Watertown, NY this past weekend for a super fun day of racing and hanging out!    The Black was the site for the first of the Whitewater King of New York race series, and I wanted to jump in and fire down some of those rapids with the local…

Sandy River Showdown

For such a young event, the Sandy River Showdown certainly had its act together.  It could have been the perfect weather, or the Mt Hood Community College film crew following the competitors around everywhere; either way, the event was a success.

Downriver races on Saturday attracted both World…

A Little East Coast Love

Paddling into the light on the West Prong

With spring starting off well here in the southeast I figured now would be a good time to give you a little bit of East Coast paddling tour.  These are some of my favorite areas to paddle on the East Coast and highlight some of the top destination…

Trip Report - Hood River

This last weekend (11/12-11/14) I went over to Hood River for the first time with Seth Stoenner and Ethan McLeod from Boise, ID. We got there about a month too early for some of classics like the Little White to be going off, but we did happen to find a Money Drop that had a lot of water going and also the Green Truss was on the low side of perfect.
The first day we found our kayaking spot after following a logging road back up in the hills for a ways. We were all a bit freaked…

Green Boat Makes Up for My Lack of Training at Ohiopyle

Despite a lack of training for the Ohiopyle Falls Race, I had a decent performance. I would attribute that to speed, maneuverability, and general ease of use of the Green Boat. I hopped in my friend's Green Boat for the longboat race, and I immediately felt comfortable. The stability was great, and it took very little time for me to dial the boat in.

As for the race, I may have underestimated the speed of the Green Boat. Certain lines looked good to go in my head, but when…

Sometimes you've got to know when to hold'em

The Gambler by Kenny Rogers, I particularly like the version that features Wyclif (I think) and its some good words of advice. I've noticed over the years that a lot of folks who paddle tend to push the limits without keeping their future in mind. I know that its true with me anyways, often times I'm only thinking of the next rapid or the next run so I'll just push things out of my mind. While this has served me well and for the most part keeps my life in perspective there are times when it… Continue

Attainments and Kayaking

I noticed a hint of color in a tree the other day and realized that Fall is already upon us. Fall means a lot of great things here in the southeast from cooler days to waiting in hope for some hurricane rain to get on that favorite run. It also means that its race time! That's right, for those crazy (and not so crazy) folks that like to paddle downstream in a hurry the fall brings the promise of the Animal Upper Gauley Race, the Russell Fork Race and the Green Race.…

2010 Jerry's Baddle

Another successful Jerry's Baddle past us! For those of you that don't know Jerry's Baddle is an event, in memory of Jerry Beckwith, combining a full run of the Green River Narrows and a 26 mile road bike ride (with a lot of elevation gain). The best part about the event is that it benefits ALS and the Green River access fund, two very worthy causes. To find out more about the race/cause and to join for next year visit… Continue
