A Little White Engagement

About 4 years ago in Oct. 2008, I was putting on the Green Truss section of the White Salmon River with a group of friends and a guy…

Another week in the Columbia River Gorge....with a helicopter!

I can't think of a weekend this whole year where I didn't go on some sort of adventure, from back country skiing in the Northern Cascades to kayaking trips across the Pacific Northwest. I know it's a bit late, but here's a post from a few weekends ago.

Rush told me that over the weekend, there would be a helicopter filming…

New Mamba

With news of all of the rivers in the Columbia River Gorge flooding, Olin Wimberg, Eric Parker and I drove to the gorge for a weekend of high water paddling and a much needed break from school. When I arrived home, there was a new Dagger Mamba 8.6 waiting for me, as well as a box from Bomber Gear. Eager to test out the new equipment, I headed to one of my favorite runs in the world-- the Little White Salmon River in Washington state.

The Little White was running…

Winter Update: Dipper Creek, Abiqua Falls, Eagle Creek

Undoubtedly the most action-packed winter of my life, I'm still trying to slow everything down and get a breath of fresh air. From tall drops and flooding rivers to fresh powder and big lines on the mountain, this has been on of the most memorable winters of my life.…

White Salmon Riverfest and BZ Falls Huckfest

The 6th annual White Salmon Riverfest was celebrated with sunny blue skies, high water, good food, and great people. On July 10th, community members gathered in recognition of one of the areas most treasured natural resources-- the White Salmon River. With dramatic changes soon to be made to the river, there was an enormous turnout with many curious locals. In less than four months, the removal of the river’s only major dam will begin…

Great Falls!

Got to spend some time at Great Falls on the Potomac this past week and man what a fun time!  I hadn't paddled there since college and I'd forgotten how much variety there is on that river.  Everything from beginner sections to Class V lines on the Falls plus scenic sections ideal for Stand Up Paddle Boards or Rec Kayaks.  The thing that struck me the most was how awesome it is to have a river resource like that so close to such a large city.  It's pretty wild to think that when you're…

Idaho River Explosion - Year 2

Simply put, Idaho whitewater is famed for being big.  Last year, the kayaking world witnessed the explosion of water down the North Fork of the Payette and created one of the largest and most technical runs in the World.  What caused this run off was a combination of several warm weeks preceding with above average snow pack and then a massive rain storm which dropped about 2in of rain.  This combination resulted a utterly massive and powerful river, and if you haven't gotten a chance to…

Green Boat Makes Up for My Lack of Training at Ohiopyle

Despite a lack of training for the Ohiopyle Falls Race, I had a decent performance. I would attribute that to speed, maneuverability, and general ease of use of the Green Boat. I hopped in my friend's Green Boat for the longboat race, and I immediately felt comfortable. The stability was great, and it took very little time for me to dial the boat in.

As for the race, I may have underestimated the speed of the Green Boat. Certain lines looked good to go in my head, but when…

New lines can lead to hair raising exits...

Hello all! I've got a heck of a story for yall!

Yesterday Evan Garcia, the Wells brothers (Todd and Brendan) and myself fired over to the Upper Lewis Falls, an ultra classic in the Mt Adams/Mt St Helens area. An absolutely beautiful waterfall that provides the paddler with many options to choose from as far as which line he/she wants to take - with none of them being easy.

The classic line - which comes into play later in the season when the flows are lower - is…
