Off season

For most of us the paddling season is starting to wind down until spring time when the rivers will flow again. Cross training is essential to keep strong for your first 'off the couch' paddling session of the spring. The best way to cross train is to get out and play! What ever it is, where ever you are, keep exploring the outdoors. A set of nordic skis, running shoes, snowboard, or a surf board are great gifts to ask for Christmas to make sure you will be as strong as ever when the paddling… Continue

NubleFest 2010

When most people think of kayaking in Chile they think of the steep creeks of Pucon or of the big water at the Futa, but I was fortunate enough to spend the past week…

Trip Report - Hood River

This last weekend (11/12-11/14) I went over to Hood River for the first time with Seth Stoenner and Ethan McLeod from Boise, ID. We got there about a month too early for some of classics like the Little White to be going off, but we did happen to find a Money Drop that had a lot of water going and also the Green Truss was on the low side of perfect.
The first day we found our kayaking spot after following a logging road back up in the hills for a ways. We were all a bit freaked…

Washington State Gives Condit Dam Removal the Green Light

Last month, the Washington Department of Ecology issued the water quality permit needed to remove Condit Dam on the White Salmon River. The permit is a major milestone and is the final step before issuance of a dam removal order by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, which is expected later this year. Once removed, the dam will restore several miles of whitewater and allow the White Salmon’s namesake fish to recover from the brink of… Continue

Extra Waterproofing Your Kayak

I think it's safe to say that no one likes a leaky kayak. I especially don't like a leaky kayak, so I decided to take note on a few of the things I do to keep my kayak and everything inside it extra dry.

First and foremost I make sure to tighten the screws on my kayak on a regular basis (every few weeks for myself). When we paddle our kayaks we put stress on each of the joints where pieces of outfitting (i.e. seat, thigh braces, bulkhead) meet with the plastic shell of the…

Why Every Paddler Needs to Practice the Back Stroke

When was the last time you practiced paddling backwards? If you’re like most paddlers you probably don’t remember or have never worked on your back stroke. That’s because it feels challenging and the benefits

of back paddling aren’t always given the respect that they deserve.

There are many reasons why you should spend time on this stroke and perhaps the most obvious one is that you never know when you’ll end up getting turned around and having to run a rapid backwards. When…

A 40 to 50 foot wave took me out when I was surfing down the face of it on a jetski

First big day in the surf and I got worked. The coast guard and 911 was

called because none of the rescue sleds saw what went down. The

biggest waves were about 50 feet tall. I was driving a photographer when

we had a close out set that rolled throughout the deep channel. I

turned my jet ski around and was surfing down a 40 to 50 foot face when my jetski died. The

wave…
