Kayak Session has the first day of pics and info over at their website from Day 1 of the Freestyle Kayaking World Championships

With this little ditty included:

But the show was not over yet, Simon Hirter, organizer of the event went on with his own "freestyle speech" (with no notes...)laid back as ever, he said how proud he was to see such an amazing amount of talent on his hometown wave; but that was still not finished... US team member Rush Sturges rocked the… Continue

Our First Days in Switzerland

Greetings from Swiss Land!! We'd like to send out thanks to everyone who helped us get to Switzerland. Thanks for your generosity and support! The Utah Whitewater Club did their unique part by making a deal with Corey that for every $100 they raised he would drink a bootie beer. So the night before we left for Switzerland Corey pounded 4 bootie beers. I will upload the video soon!

We left Monday morning for Switzerland. We flew from… Continue

Eastern Canada Sessions #1: Taureau

Greetings All!

Just checking in from beautiful Asheville, NC. It's been a sick summer and I finally have the computer time to put up some updates. Included is the first of many. This summer I was able to hit the Taureau section of the Jacques Cartiere River with my buddy Adam Herzog. This region of the Laurentian Mountains in Quebec is nothing short of epic, and I don't seem to grow tired of visiting it.

This was my first time on the Taureau, and I've been wanting to get… Continue

Team River Runner Blinded Veterans Deschutes River Trip

Last Thursday, we led a group of disabled veterans on a rafting and kayaking trip down Oregon's Deschutes River. We worked with the local chapter of Team River Runner to organize the trip for the annual Blinded Veterans Association National Conference, held this year in Portland, Oregon. We had a crew of 20 fully blind, partially blind and otherwise disabled veterans from WWII, the Vietnam War, and the recent Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The highlight of the day for me was Lt Col Steve Beres,… Continue

Great article on the state of Whitewater Kayaking today

Return to River Grassroots a Blessing (from the Denver Post)

On the heels of Outside magazine's feature on whitewater kayaking, here's a different take:

Excerpt

But it's that core crew of river runners gathered around the takeout listening to Harvey and the Wallbangers through a single, small amp as a makeshift slide show flashes on a moth-covered sheet after dark that truly defines the pursuit as the ultimate in adventure-sports cool. Paddling has…

Cherry Bomb... a half pipe?

No, I have not quit class five kayaking and, no, I’m not trying to claim mountain biking is as cool as Sierra multi-days but there comes a time in everyone’s life when they have “try new things”. May it be school, droughts, being poor, shoulder injuries, or working an internship in Bend, Oregon (where the kayaking is NOT the Sierras but the single track is endless) that keeps you off the river, hopefully you can shred on bikes.*

Remember, we’re not replacing kayaking we’re opening our… Continue

Wells Brothers Surf Skook

Until this year neither my brother nor I had ever surfed a wave as massive or as powerful as the wave at the Skookumchuck Narrows. We both have a strong creeking background, but rarely find time to go playboating, so this year we signed up for a summer session with World Class Kayak Academy. Based outside Missoula, MT the session kicked off with daily paddles down the Alberton Gorge of the Clark Fork, and surf sessions at Brennan's Wave. A week into… Continue

Paddling as cross-training

Paddling is great cross-training for other sports. It builds upper body and core strength and is great for balance and endurance. It is a fun way to get out and enjoy the outdoors and a nice break from the gym. It is also a great way to beat the heat on hot summer days. Kayaking trips are a good way to get out in the wilderness because the boat carries the weight of your gear.

Photos from Girls at Play Summer Tour Events, Retreats and Clinics

I’ve had a really fantastic summer of travels and teaching up and down the East Coast. I’m very grateful for all of the wonderful women that I’ve had the honor of meeting and paddling with in paddling retreats, clinics and GAP Summer Tour events. I also want to thank all of the host kayak schools and retailers: NEPAKS, MKC, Bearpaw, Appomattox River Co, Brown Ledge Camp and the NOC. Here are some photos to share with you from my travels. I know there are some events missing so feel free to send… Continue
