'Year of the River' film wins at National Paddling Film Festival
To a kayaker, there's just something therapeutic about watching a dam blow up. We dream about it, we joke about it, but we don't really ever expect it to happen. Fortunately, it did happen this year in the Pacific Northwest and we'll soon see miles of new whitewater and restored salmon runs because of it. The story stuck a chord this weekend at the National Paddling Film Festival, where Craziest Idea won 'Best Professional Documentary' and 'Best of Show.'
The…

Well I'm excited to say I have a new glossy boat! Step one to outfitting a new boat for me is the bulk head. I'm sure this has been done quite a few times, but I'll give you my take specifically for the Nomad bulkhead. I've played around with this system a bit with gymnastics floor foam in another boat, but the…

Video: Huge Dam Removals and the Most Inspiring Year of My Life
On October 26, 2011, crews packed more than 700 pounds of dynamite into the base of Condit Dam on the White Salmon River in southwest Washington. Once detonated, the White Salmon River erupted through the hole, draining the reservoir behind the dam in less than an hour. One month…

Bald Rock Canyon of the Middle Feather
Last week, after returning from a month of guiding in Belize, I officially transitioned out to California for the winter. I was pretty stoked that on day one back in the state I not only got to go kayaking, but got to check a new run off my list- Bald Rock Canyon of the Middle Feather. Last May I was fortunate enough to get on the amazingly beautiful Devil's Canyon section of the Middle Feather, just upstream of the Bald Rock section, so I was excited to see what…

Upper Cherry Creek, California
You all have probably heard of the infamous Cherry Creek in California. If you haven't it's a High Sierra classic that you should put on your to-do list. I was lucky enough to paddle the upper section last summer along with Lane Jacobs, Louis Geltman, Jay Gifford, and Seth Swallen. The river was pristine, the scenery gorgeous, and the whitewater incredible. I put together a video with footage from my GoPro Hero video camera and also included some photos that Seth Swallen…
