The Dean

The Dean River is located in the coastal range of British Columbia about a 10 hour drive north of Whistler.  The drainage just to the south of the dean is the legendary Homathko river.  The dean caught our eye while planning for a trip to British Columbia last august due to its relatively unknown whitewater ( a few blogs out there to give us an idea), it is a supper remote multiday (plane flight in and out) and has great class 5 whitewater.  The planning for this trip was half the battle, I…See More

North Fork of the Little Wind

I had the pleasure of doing the first decent of the upper north fork of the little wind a few years back with my brother and some other friends.  Since then I had wanted to get back in there with more water, this summer I convinced fellow durangotan nate klema to meet me and a few others to go back.  The run starts with the longest 6 mile hike in ever, this thing really tires you out, but the reward is camping at twin lakes.…See More

Vallecito

The natural runoff has long been gone here in Colorado, all there is left is to boat is a few dam release runs that are fading fast.  With such a low water year in the state I was amazed at how good of a season we had down in Durango.  It lasted 2-3 months of great levels on pandoras box and vallecito creek, two of the best runs out there.  Vallecito creek is one of the best creek runs anywhere, the only downside is that it is only a mile long but that mile is stacked with great rapids.  The…See More

Pushing your limits

Kayaking isn't always about pushing yourself to run harder whitewater or big drops/rapids.  There have been numberous examples of amazing endurance feets in our sport most notably in the past 5 or so years are Tommy hilike and John grace running the middle fork of the kings in a single day.  This feat was repeated 2 seasons ago by ben stookesbery and chris korbulic, I was on a 5 day trip down the run when chris and ben passed us at the end of the bottom 9.  The two seemed as fresh and calm as…See More

South East weekend

I got super lucky last weekend when I went down to visit my brother in Knoxville, it rained.  Living out in colorado makes you lazy in watching gauges and weather because the runs are pretty easy to predict when they will have water.  The south east is a completely different experience, most of the time you have to wait until the morning your gonna paddle to know what is running.  Anyway it was good that my brother lives down there and has it dialed, we got to run the west prong, the raven fork…See More
