New Hampshire to the Yukon in Three Weeks

In mid May, I packed up my stuff, three pairs of skis, two pairs of ski boots, my kayaking gear, two kayaks, two mountain bikes, and my dog and drove west. Well, west and then north. 6500 miles in the following three weeks. But it was not all for naught -- along the way, I did a high water trip down the Middle Fork of the Salmon for a friend's bachelor party and paddled in Montana, Idaho, Washington, and BC.…See More

46 Days in a Row During New England's Worst Season (Ever?)

People don't really think of New England as having a "snowpack" or a snowmelt season for kayaking, but the truth is, most years we have at least a month of reliable creeking. Last year, we had more than two months during which the best rivers we have were running every day on a diurnal cycle. This year...well, the grim snowpack -- not surprisingly -- gave way to a grim snowmelt season.…See More

Summer in New England...in March?

Well, we've now had a week straight of record high temps (in some places by over 20 degrees). Apparently we skipped right past spring (typically in April) to the hottest part of summer here in New England. Conveniently enough, I got the week off work, so I've been paddling every day since spring started 2.5 weeks ago. A solid week of training attaining the White River before melt got going was a good start to the season, but now we're fully into creeking and I've been taking a lot of days off…See More

New England Fall Wrap-up

It's been a terrible fall for kayaking up in New England. All the rain the normally falls over the course of a few months decided to fall over a few hours, devastating Vermont and NH and making for a horrible kayaking season. The Dewey Mills dam on the Ottaquechee during Irene.Moosefest was fun as always. The high water dished out…See More

Beaver-fest – Labor Day Weekend in NY

Labor Day weekend marks the beginning of the Fall boating season in New England. There's boating all summer, but as the leaves start to change and 'peeping' season begins in earnest, the rain starts to actually bring rivers up for more than a few hours at a time. I've been to the Labor Day Beaver/Raquette releases for a few years now, and they're always a blast. This year, we rallied up Friday night straight to Colton. After a healthy breakfast at the local diner, we spent all day lapping the…See More

Summer Rockies Tour

The boating this summer has been pretty great. Graduated college, drove to the Rockies, and spent the last month kayaking in Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, and Montana. Now I'm back in New England getting stoked for a summer of Hartlands and the bi-weekly Raquette releases.I started off with a couple days in Salida, CO at Fibark, running a bunch of the Ark Valley classics at high water. I even playboated a little bit on the Salida playwave. Here's Justin Crannell on the wave:…See More

Vermont, the Waterfall State

I spent a few days this spring tracking down waterfalls in Vermont with the help of http://northeastwaterfalls.com/ and some beta from Ryan McCall and ended up with some awesome drops, some of which we ran and some of which I need to go back for.I scouted Dewey Mills on the Ottaquechee at high water once a few years ago and knew there was a line river left of the island but didn't run it. This year, I went and looked and it was just a bit too high…See More

Everything is Bigger in BC

A couple weeks ago, I packed up and left the Yukon for Squamish, BC. I'd never boated in BC (except up near the Yukon) before, but what I'd heard, more or less, was, "Your threshold for being scared will going to go way up." Also, "Everything is bigger in BC." Well, after a couple weeks there, there's definitely some truth to it. The rivers aren't necessarily harder, and the local ratings aren't as sandbagged as everyone claims (or my opinions are also sandbagged), but almost every run comes…
