Another week in the Columbia River Gorge....with a helicopter!

I can't think of a weekend this whole year where I didn't go on some sort of adventure, from back country skiing in the Northern Cascades to kayaking trips across the Pacific Northwest. I know it's a bit late, but here's a post from a few weekends ago.Rush told me that over the weekend, there would be a helicopter filming some of my favorite rivers and waterfalls around my home town of Trout Lake, Washington. I was super excited to see a new perspective on kayaking, especially on the rivers…See More

New Mamba

With news of all of the rivers in the Columbia River Gorge flooding, Olin Wimberg, Eric Parker and I drove to the gorge for a weekend of high water paddling and a much needed break from school. When I arrived home, there was a new Dagger Mamba 8.6 waiting for me, as well as a box from Bomber Gear. Eager to test out the new equipment, I headed to one of my favorite runs in the world-- the Little White Salmon River in Washington state. The Little White was running at a very juicy 4.3 feet on the…See More

Winter Update: Dipper Creek, Abiqua Falls, Eagle Creek

Undoubtedly the most action-packed winter of my life, I'm still trying to slow everything down and get a breath of fresh air. From tall drops and flooding rivers to fresh powder and big lines on the mountain, this has been on of the most memorable winters of my life. On top of dealing with all the hard work and fun (or rather fun with some hard work) of college, our group of young paddlers representing Bellingham, Washington have managed to break away from the overwhelming scene of lecture…See More

Skookumchuck Narrows

I woke up Saturday morning to my phone ringing and a groggy ten second conversation. “We’re going to Skook, I’ll pick you up in a half hour,” said a voice that I couldn’t quite put a face to. I knew it had to be one of the young local Bellingham paddlers and without thinking replied, “I’m in, see you in thirty.” Impulse decisions have always led to the most exciting adventures of my life and I knew this weekend was going to be one to remember. On Friday, my plans to fly to the Homathko River…See More

Lewis River Falls

The summer of 2011 has treated both coasts to epic storms and unheard of amounts of water. The Pacific Northwest hasn’t experienced any dramatic flooding, but any local paddler knows that it has been a great year for boating. My favorite local runs including the White Salmon, Cispus, and Lewis River have all kept stable flows late into the summer and still have healthy amounts of water. The highlight of my summer has undoubtedly been the significant amount of time I’ve been able to spend in the…See More

White Salmon Riverfest and BZ Falls Huckfest

The 6th annual White Salmon Riverfest was celebrated with sunny blue skies, high water, good food, and great people. On July 10th, community members gathered in recognition of one of the areas most treasured natural resources-- the White Salmon River. With dramatic changes soon to be made to the river, there was an enormous turnout with many curious locals. In less than four months, the removal of the river’s only major dam will begin to take place. This means that an entire lake will be…See More

Life in the Pacific Northwest

My fears of public school  vanished as I arrived to yet another rainy day in Portland, OR. Every drainage in the pacific northwest was flooding beyond belief, with my favorite local runs more than double the average flow. My arrival back home marked the end to a glorious four months traveling with World Class Kayak Academy across the East Coast of the U.S. and Canada, and to Zambia and Uganda. (…See More

Tips for a Rope Tow

If you don’t want to get out of your boat and hike or don’t own a jet ski, there’s an easy, affordable and relatively effortless way to surf the wave of your dreams. A rope tow is very similar to water skiing or wakeboarding except the rope is permanently fixed to a rock or tree. On the opposite end is a small handle, just wide enough for a single hand. Traditionally, attached to or near the handle is a second length of rope that is used to pull the rope back to shore. …See More
