it's that time of year when water turns to snow and the skis come out. I was filming a tv show in Valdez, AK this summer with Dean Cummings who is one my childhood heroes. Dean was in all the major kayak films back in the day and his voice, like Warren Miller's, brings back countless memories. This summer, while kayaking on the Tsaina river near Valdez, I had a chance to hear all about Dean's life and my sense of hero only grew. Here's a great blog post on Outside's blog about Dean. Be sure to…See More

Andrew Roan commented on Brad Ludden's blog post 'Summer Training! It's Gonna Be A Big One!'
Another strengthening exercise that find works really well is to get a can of food or a rock, hold out parallel to the ground in one hand, and then make quick up and down motions from the back to the front.  You can start feeling it pretty…

Summer Training! It's Gonna Be A Big One!

If you're anything like me, texting and driving is safe compared to driving along a river in the spring time! This year is especially bad if you live in the Northern Rockies, California or the Northwest. After a MASSIVE snow year, all signs are pointing to an equally epic run off. It's time to get ready for spring, paddling and all things awesome! Here are a few key pointers to get ready for big water. 1. MOBILITY IS KEY! Avoiding injuries is better than rehabbing and most injuries can be…See More

Your next challenge

This one is simple. With kayak season right around the corner, I need you all to start challenging yourselves to get ready for an epic season of run off. Here it is: If you know a young adult 18-39 with cancer (they can have it, have had it, be in treatment or anything in between) your challenge is to tell them about the free adventures that First Descents offers. This is a chance for you to share your love of kayaking with someone who could really stand to benefit from it! We have programs all…See More

What have you done to challenge yourself lately?

It's a question that most of us kayakers ask ourselves all too often. It's what draws us to the sport. Through challenge we grow, learn and find presence. What many of us don't realize is that challenge can be more than just a life refresher. It can be medicine...therapy. At least that's the feedback we've had at First Descents. Through legitimate outdoor challenges, our participants defy cancer, understand it, compartmentalize it and…See More

Training

For some of us, paddling continues year round. For others though, the water freezes and the powder begins. For us powder hounds we need to find ways to stay in shape for the approaching spring run off. There are a few key things we can be doing to hit the water stronger than ever.1. Keep your shoulders strong. Practice hand stand push ups, overhead squats and shoulder presses.2. Maintain core strength by doing pull ups, push ups and pull overs. If you don't know what a pull over is you should…See More

Brad Ludden replied to George Bergantz's discussion 'Anyone use *front* float bags in Mamba or Nomad?'
GOOD QUESTION! I can say that you're safety boater friends won't be complaining if you have front float bags but can also say you don't need them. I run a program called First Descents and we offer kayak programs to beginner kayakers…

Pick a Challenge!

As the water begins to dry up and the first signs of fall are in the air, our whitewater challenges often dwindle and we're left "sans adrenaline" until next year. Now is the time to pick you "off-season" challenge and get to work. Most importantly, do this for a good cause. It's always even more rewarding to finish these challenges if we can do them for something bigger than ourselves. As an example, I hate running so I've decided to challenge myself with running the NYC Marathon this November.…See More

Eating right?

Ok, ok, I know that kayakers are hungry people and we usually shop by quantity and price but here are a few things to think about if you can when selecting your next meal. Remember, diet is one of the biggest pieces to training and, if done correctly, can help you find a whole new gear when paddling!Eat a lot of lean protein. If you're active and paddling a lot, you should be consuming about 1 gram of protein per pound (of your weight) per day. Thus, I try to consume about 175 grams of protein…See More

Here are a few quick things you can do to get ready asap!Handstand push upsPull upsPush upsOverhead squatsIn the past we have focused more on working the entire body which is super important but since the season's upon us, it's time to focus. Here's a "fun" little work out you can do to pack it all in.5 handstand…See More
