Walk on Water

For each thing we lose, we gain another… When a skiing accident left Greg Mallory paralyzed from the waist down, he turned to kayaking to help him escape his wheelchair. Now he’s an accomplished Class V whitewater paddler who finds strength,…

"WOW What an inspiration Greg is! I became disabled after being hit head on on the highway back in 2006. and after spending just a year and a half in a wheelchair, I now know how difficult it is. I too have had to start over and after 3 years of…"

Huck: The Risks and Rewards of a Life Driven By Freefall

I started running big waterfalls when I turned 18 and moved out to Oregon. I loved the thrill and the focus that it demanded. Taking those risks, running big waterfalls, pushed me to inject that kind of passion and drive into every aspect of my life. It got me to where I am today and I wouldn't go back and…See More

Oregon's Wild & Scenic Chetco River Protected From Gold Mining

Last spring, I ventured into Oregon's remote Chetco River--a rarely paddled Wild & Scenic gem in the heart of the Kalmiopsis Wilderness.  Our trip was certainly the most epic I'd ever done in Oregon--a 2-day brutal hike in followed by 2 days of paddling through one of the most remote parts of the state.  The adventure drew us…See More

'Year of the River' film wins at National Paddling Film Festival

To a kayaker, there's just something therapeutic about watching a dam blow up.  We dream about it, we joke about it, but we don't really ever expect it to happen.  Fortunately, it did happen this year in the Pacific Northwest and we'll soon see miles of new whitewater and restored salmon runs because of it.  The story stuck a chord this weekend at the National Paddling Film Festival, where Craziest Idea won 'Best Professional Documentary' and 'Best of Show.'  The Year of the River series was…See More

Video: Huge Dam Removals and the Most Inspiring Year of My Life

On October 26, 2011, crews packed more than 700 pounds of dynamite into the base of Condit Dam on the White Salmon River in southwest Washington. Once detonated, the White Salmon River erupted through the hole, draining the reservoir behind the dam in less than an hour. One month earlier, the largest river restoration in…See More

125 Foot Tall Condit Dam Breached with a Bang

October 26th, 2011 is certainly a day that will go down in history. After the Blaster in Charge yelled “fire in the hole!” and ignited the charges packed into the bottom of 125' tall Condit Dam, the White Salmon River was explosively set free for the first time in 100 years.  The lake took less than 2 hours to drain, carrying an incredible amount of sediment and debris downstream to the Columbia.  Now, a more gradual process begins–the erosion of millions of cubic yards of trapped silt, the…See More

I’m a professional kayaker, filmmaker and National Geographic Young Explorer based in Portland, Oregon. Along with two partners, I run Epicocity Project, a media company that blends adventure with science and conservation for TV, video, live events, print and web. In the last couple of years, we’ve organized expeditions to Papua New Guinea, China, Congo and Bolivia and are currently working on a film that tells the story of glacial recession in the Americas caused by global climate change. We’re working with top scientists, collaborating with leading conservation advocacy organizations and kayaking the class V whitewater rivers that flow from key glaciers that are rapidly receding.
