I’m a professional kayaker, filmmaker and National Geographic Young Explorer based in Portland, Oregon. Along with two partners, I run Epicocity Project, a media company that blends adventure with science and conservation for TV, video, live events, print and web. In the last couple of years, we’ve organized expeditions to Papua New Guinea, China, Congo and Bolivia and are currently working on a film that tells the story of glacial recession in the Americas caused by global climate change. We’re working with top scientists, collaborating with leading conservation advocacy organizations and kayaking the class V whitewater rivers that flow from key glaciers that are rapidly receding.

Love Your Whitewater? Protect It!

With World Rivers Day coming up on September 28, it got me thinking about the water running through rivers in my neck of the woods. As paddlers, we're attuned to how much water is in our favorite river at every time of year — we have to be to find the best whitewater.

But how much water is running across the United States? Or around the globe? I found these cool maps on the… Continue

First Descent: A Dam Demolished Frees A Drowned Section of River (VIDEO)

This spring, I joined two friends at the putin for Upper Trout Creek, a classic class V run that for more than 100 years has cascaded through steep boulder drops to a lake. This trip down Trout Creek would be different though--the recent removal of Hemlock Dam meant that the lake was gone, and we had several new miles of river to explore.

VIDEO: Big Water Means Big Swims on the Colorado River

While out in Vail last week for the Teva Mountain Games, Team Wavesport's Trip Jennings and I cruised down I70 to Barrel Springs Rapid on the Colorado River for a little afternoon fun. With us was longtime paddling partner Adam Mills Elliott, who demonstrated that while a big water swim doesn't necessarily need to be a long and terrifying ordeal.

So check out this multicam video of our run down through the rapid, edited in real time, to see how the experience, and the rescue, went for… Continue
