It would also be good to turn off the autoplay on that video; at this link for example: http://www.teamdagger.com/profiles/blog/list

125 Foot Tall Condit Dam Breached with a Bang

October 26th, 2011 is certainly a day that will go down in history. After the Blaster in Charge yelled “fire in the hole!” and ignited the charges packed into the bottom of 125' tall Condit Dam, the White Salmon River was explosively set free for the first time in 100 years.  The lake took less than 2 hours to drain, carrying an incredible amount of sediment and debris downstream to the Columbia.  Now, a more gradual process begins–the erosion of millions of cubic yards of trapped silt, the…See More

VIDEO: Huge Dam Removal Means New Whitewater on the White Salmon

In 2 weeks, Condit Dam on the White Salmon River in Washington will be packed with enough explosives to blow a huge hole in the base of the concrete wall.  Moments after the climactic explosion, 10,000 CFS will gush from the tunnel and drain Northwestern Lake completely in 6 hours.  That’s the moment paddlers have been waiting for since dam removal talk begin 10 years ago—that’s when we get to see, for the first time, whitewater that’s been hidden under the lake for the last 100 years. …See More

World's Biggest Dam Removal Begins This Week (Updated)

The world's largest dam removal project began yesterday on Washington's Elwha River.  The removal two dams--210 foot tall Glines Canyon Dam and 108 foot tall Elwha Dam--will restore whitewater and salmon spawning habitat that's been cut off for 100 years.  The project will take about 3 years to complete and, once the dams are gone, 70…See More

This is going to be one of the most incredible documentations of the changing of a river ever seen.  I'm looking forward to watching the river fall back into place, finding its ancestral path.  Thanks for all your work Andy!

Tearing Down a Dam: 3 Years of Timelapse on the White Salmon

A couple of weeks ago, White Salmon local Steve Stampfli and I waded through chest-deep poison oak along the shore of Northwestern Lake with one very cool toy--a solar powered, weatherproof timelapse camera system.  We were headed to a clearing just below the 125 foot tall Condit Dam, set to be packed full of dynamite and…See More

4 Days on Oregon’s Wild & Scenic Chetco River

Our team of four was abuzz with uncertainty during the drive to the Chetco—a remote, rarely run Wild & Scenic River in southern Oregon.  We knew that we had, at least, a 3-mile hike to get to the river from the top of Chetco Pass.  What we didn’t know was whether the road to the top of the pass would even be open.  If it was…See More

I’m a professional kayaker, filmmaker and National Geographic Young Explorer based in Portland, Oregon. Along with two partners, I run Epicocity Project, a media company that blends adventure with science and conservation for TV, video, live events, print and web. In the last couple of years, we’ve organized expeditions to Papua New Guinea, China, Congo and Bolivia and are currently working on a film that tells the story of glacial recession in the Americas caused by global climate change. We’re working with top scientists, collaborating with leading conservation advocacy organizations and kayaking the class V whitewater rivers that flow from key glaciers that are rapidly receding.
