Dagger

I was reading Pat's update from the road the other day and he mentioned that he never likes to write an update on a trip while its in progress because he's superstitious. That got me thinking a bit.. am I superstitious? I didn't have to go very far before I realized that yes I am. Not only am I superstitious but most of them are pretty comical or at least once I realize I'm doing them its comical. Here are my best two:
A little while ago I was at the put-in to the Green Narrows with Woody when he asked me if I always put-in in the same place. At first I laughed, then I thought about it, and then I started paying attention. Yes I do always put-in in the same place. In fact I appear to be so enamored with my particular put-in that I will wait in line to slide down this section of bank:) Now I can't tell you exactly why, nor do I do this on any other river (to my knowledge), in fact I can't even really tell you what might happen if I didn't put-in there I just do. I think that's really the best part about superstitions: they're not always logical and don't always have a reason behind them that's just the way its done. So if you see me waiting in line at the put-in to the Green just laugh along with me.

My next best one actually evolved from something semi useful. Ever notice that if you go kayaking right after you put on sunscreen you can't hold onto your paddle? Well a nice handful of sand or dirt takes care of that problem. At least that's how it started. Now I rub dirt or sand between my hands before every competition, above big rapids, and before I go on unknown runs. I must admit that this one really took hold after I saw the movie Gladiator, there's just something about it that makes me feel ready. Try it sometime, it really is pretty primal:)

I must say that I have several more, some more comical and some that are a tribute to the past. The one thing that they all have in common is that they represent something that I believe, even if I can't tell you exactly what. Now I know that most kayakers are a pretty superstitious or at least ritualistic lot because I've heard the stories! So let's hear it: Are you superstitious?
